Check Fraud Ring Arrested in South Sioux City
SOUTH SIOUX CITY, NE —
Tuesday afternoon, authorities arrested four suspects for multi-state check fraud, passing nearly $5,000 in bad checks.
The question Wednesday night is where will the investigation lead next?
Suspects Matthew Schincke, 48; Amber Christensen, 33; Robert Thorngren, 26; and Lacey Zakrzewski, 25 have all been charged with criminal possession of a forged instrument and theft by unlawful taking.
South Sioux City Police say the four wrote checks for a business' bank account with the Bank of the West.
When authorities arrived at the Budget Host Inn to arrest the group, they found more evidence of the counterfeit checks.
Investigators said this extent of fraud is rare, but forgery isn't uncommon.
"There's a lot of different software programs that anybody can buy at any Staples or any kind of store and um load it onto your computer and print checks," said Investigator Jeanette McFee.
Officials are warning business and the public to check your accounts regularly.
