Congressman Steve King Presents Medals to Vietnam Vet
SIOUX CITY, IA — An American veteran got some long over-due recognition this afternoon. After spending the earlier part of the day in Rock Valley assessing storm damage, Congressman Steve King was in Sioux City to honor Vietnam War Veteran Ralph Mertz, presenting him with multiple military medals for his service.
The congressman said this is one of the best parts of his job."To provide medals for our veterans that weren't able to get them.... Whether their records were lost or the medals themselves were lost, that and appointments to the military academy. Those two things are the two best things I get to do," said King. "Today, we honor a veteran, Ralph Mertz, who was wounded on the battle field while he was a medic serving people that were wounded on that same battle field."Mertz was joined by his two sons, both who are in the military. He says having them there made the ceremony extra special. "To have my two sons here with me means the world to me. They've both served middle east deployments... and thank God came home safe," said Vietnam Veteran Ralph Mertz. Mertz is a Sioux City native and Central High graduate who enlisted in the Army in 1968. Siouxland News thanks Ralph Mertz and his family for their sacrifice and honorable service to our country.
