Counseling Provided for Students After Death of Teacher
SIOUX CITY, IA —
Students and staff in the Sioux City school district are trying to deal with the tragic death of two of their own.
Susan Smid and her husband Stephen died Thursday morning when they were overcome by smoke in their home.
Susan was a music teacher at Liberty Elementary, and Stephen worked for the school district's Food Services Department.
A counselor at Liberty says they're doing their best to help students cope with this troubling news.
"Letting them know that it's okay to be upset, it's okay to cry, it's okay to be mad, it's okay to be confused. All those feelings that they're having, it's okay to have. Doing everything we can to help them hear that news and help them cope throughout the day was our main focus yesterday," said Jennifer Gomez, Head Counselor for Sioux City Community Schools.
Gomez says students and their parents are also welcome to talk with counselors or staff members on an individual basis as well.
