(LE MARS, IA) They're already teammates on the field, now Le Mars Gehlen and Spalding Catholic are exploring the idea of teaming up in the classroom. But nothing is set in stone, yet.
"We are excited to begin the exploration process of the unification of Spalding Catholic High School and Gehlen Catholic High School. The two schools would work together, as one body, to provide a dynamic high school system under the title of Gehlen Catholic High School, which would be at its current location in Le Mars," says Brian Kolbeck, Gehlen Catholic High School Board President.
The two schools plan on merging, But it's not official. School board members have meetings scheduled over the next few months to discuss the process of unifying the schools.
Kolbeck says the decision came after they reviewed data showing lower enrollment numbers, and less financial support.
He says the schools plan on working to grow enrollment by adding new programs and expanding on old ones.
"Catholic education is a priority for both communities and while we realize that change may be difficult at times, it can bring about new and tremendous opportunities for our parishes, students, families and our communities," says Dennis Schmit, Spalding Catholic Board Member.
The schools plan on making a final decision in January of 2013.
