Morning Accident Sends Norfolk Man to Mercy

A Norfolk man is in critical condition this evening after an accident on Highway 275 near Norfolk. The Stanton County Sheriff's Office says 79-year-old Longin Karel of Norfolk was driving a tractor westbound on Highway 275 when his tractor was hit from behind by a car. The impact caused the tractor to tip over and pin Karel beneath it. He was freed by rescue crews and airlifted to Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City in critical condition. The driver of the car, 21-year-old Erica Pilger of Pilger was taken by ambulance to Faith Regional Health Services in Norfolk with minor injuries. The Sheriff's Office says speed and texting are believed to be factors in the crash.
