Nebraska Gambling Proposal Gives Hope to Atokad Renovation

The metro area could be in line for another gambling venue at the site of an old racetrack in South Sioux City.

By a slim margin, the Unicameral has approved giving Nebraskans a chance to vote on a constitutional amendment that would allow betting on so-called "historical horse races" at the state's thoroughbred tracks.

That's given a big boost to plans by Ho-Chunk, Incorporated to build a gaming and entertainment venue at the former Atokad Downs site in South Sioux City.

Not only would voters statewide have to approve the amendment in November, but voters in Dakota County would later have to give their approval to the idea.

Historical horse racing involved using machines to make bets on race that have been run in the past, but information that may tip off a person to the outcome of the race has been erased from the video.
