At around 4:30 Thursday afternoon, near Salix, an SUV that was heading northbound and pulling a flatbed trailer lost control because of road conditions, crossed the median, and was hit by two southbound cars. In all, five vehicles were involved in the crash.
The Iowa State Patrol shut down southbound I-29 and detoured traffic until about 8 o'clock Thursday night. A passenger in that northbound vehicle died, and the driver is being treated at Mercy Medical Center. Four other people were treated and released.
State troopers asked us to remind drivers that even though it's spring, road conditions can change quickly, so be alert.
