Orange City Daycare Provider Pleads Not Guilty to Felony Charges

It's been delayed for weeks, but Thursday morning 33-year-old Rochelle Sapp made her first court appearance for her arraignment and bail hearing on murder charges for the death of 3-year-old Autumn Elgersma.

In a written arraignment, Sapp pled not guilty to the charges of 1st degree murder and child endangerment.
She also asked to reduce her bail to $25,000 dollars but Sioux County Judge Edward Jacobson denied that request.
The judge also ordered several restrictions before her next court appearance on April 18th. "Defendant will not be allowed to leave the 30th district of the state of Iowa. She will be subject to pretrial supervision by the 3rd judicial district department of correctional services. Um (pauses) and she will be restricted to contact with our own children rather than any other children," said Jacobson. The babysitter is accused of murdering 3 year old Autumn Elgersma, who suffered fatal head injuries in late October.
In an affidavit, authorities say Sapp claimed she threw the girl down on the ground because Elgersma couldn't take off her jacket off.
Bail will remain at $250,000 dollars.
Sapp's next court appearance will be April 18th.
