It takes just one person to change one life. That's the new slogan for the United Way and its fundraising campaign for 2013.
Tuesday morning, the United Way held its annual kick-off campaign at the YMCA in South Sioux City.
This year's theme represents the power of one and collectively, the power of uniting together as one to make the Siouxland area healthier and happier.
Last year the group raised $3.2 million, and this year it hopes to raise $100,000 more, a grand total of $3.3 million.
John Gleeson, chair of the United Way of Siouxland, hopes to exceed that goal. Right now, he says the group is off to a good start raising $300,000 so far.
"Each of us, doing what we can whether its 1 dollar a week, 5 dollars a week, or even 50 dollars a week. It can make a difference, and the power of the one individual supporting United way can have a life long impact on one person, through a child, through an individual struggling at times, so we're a very exciting and powerful organization working through our partners," Gleeson said.
The money raised will go towards several organizations in the area to help fight poverty, promote health, encourage productivity, educating children, and helping families gain financial stability. If you wish to donate to or volunteer with the United Way of Siouxland, visit www.unitedwaysiouxland.com
