Importance of strength training in exercise routine

Use it or lose it: the benefits of strength training

When most people thing of exercise as the get older, they probably think of walking, jogging, or biking.

But strength training is still important to good health.

Strength training is sometimes an overlooked part of our day to day workouts.

However, it is important to develop a specific exercise routine to maintain our strength and maintain our mobility.

"Our strength changes, and our mobility is going to change," says Abbi Boutwell, Doctor of Physical Therapy with Mercy Medical Center. "It's probably fair to say that how we are physically today is probably not what we were ten to twenty years ago. So we know at the end of the day that saying 'Use it or lose it' is still going to stand true."

That is why exercising specific muscle groups helps to strengthen essential muscles for everyday tasks, as well as helping to prevent injury.

You can perform your day to day tasks, like reaching, lifting, and pushing or pulling, with less effort if you have a well balanced shoulder-muscle group.

"If you're only focusing on some muscle groups, those muscle groups are going to have to maybe take over, and they are going to be a little more dominant throughout your day, and they can maybe fatigue a little bit more easily," says Boutwell.

Exercising specific muscle groups, like the shoulder, does not require fancy, expensive equipment. A lot of the exercises Boutwell demonstrated can be done at home, or on the go!

"Maybe you travel a lot for work. Or maybe you are somewhere where you don't have access to a gym, and you can incorporate these strength routines in your day to day routine so it works best for you," says Boutwell.
