American Civil Liberties Union seeks to block Nebraska executions

A month after Nebraska officials notified a death row inmate they have the drugs they need to execute him, the American Civil Liberties Union's Nebraska chapter says the state can't carry out the sentence.

They claim that Jose Sandoval's death sentence, along with those of 10 other men, were converted to life in prison when the Unicameral passed a law banning the death penalty in 2015, a law that was later blocked from taking effect and then reversed by a referendum.

The governor's office says the lawsuit is trying to overturn the clear voice of Nebraska voters and waste taxpayer money.
