UPDATE: Body believed to be missing swimmer found

UPDATE: 7/14/17

After three days of searching, the body that is believed to be that of 27 year old Chris Reeves has been found.

The body was found about a half mile to about three quarters of a mile from Burbank Beach in Union County, SD.

It happened just before one this afternoon while crews from South Dakota and Nebraska Game, Fish and Parks continued their search for Reeves, who went missing on Wednesday after being swept away by the Missouri River.

"We did spot him out on the water, we have since went out and loaded him up and we brought him back to shore," said Union County Sheriff Dan Limoges. "They were basically scanning the river and they were using binoculars and he did surface and they were able to see him then."

Limoges says finding the body will hopefully bring some closure to Reeves family back in Tallahassee, Florida.

"It's good because we can give the family some peace that he has been located and we don't have to keep the resources for down in just this area anymore so it's a big relief, mainly for the family," Limoges said.

The body was taken away by the coroner's office out of Sioux Falls. It will be heading there for an initial autopsy.

Sheriff Limoges tells us that a member of Reeves' family is travelling to the area from Florida.

And he hopes that some changes will be made to this area to better protect people, considering this is the third death at this beach in three years.

Previous Story:

The Union County Sheriff's Office confirms to us tonight they're searching the Missouri River near Burbank Beach for a 27-year-old man who went missing earlier this afternoon.

We still don't know much at this hour, but the search for that man does remain active.

The Union County Sheriff's Office tells us the man's disappearance was reported around 3:30 p.m.

He was part of a group of 6 individuals swimming in the Missouri River, out on a sandbar when he stepped off and went under.

Sheriff Dan Limoges said this is becoming a bad trend for this area.

"This is the third incident we've had with the first two confirmed drownings so you know it's really disheartening. There's a lot of activity down here we've got a lot of young individuals of all ages I guess down here but it has become a really popular place," said Limoges.

Limoges said that there are simple steps swimmers and other recreational users of the river can take to avoid tragic situations like these.

"This river is nothing to take for granted. It can be a lot of fun when you practice safely swimming and what not. But going out in the river if you're not a very good swimmer and you don't have life jackets with you it's very not good and bad things are happening," said Limoges.

Currently, both the Nebraska Game and Parks Department and the South Dakota Fish and Wildlife Service have search boats out on the river, along with the North Sioux City Police Department.

An airplane arrived around 8:00 p.m. At this time, the 27-year-old man's name is not being released.
