A final farewell to Governor Robert Ray
Iowans are bidding a final farewell tonight to one of the state's longest serving Governors.
Robert Ray died Sunday at age 89.
He led the state from 1969 to 1983 and was the only governor in the US to welcome refugees from Southeast Asia after the Vietnam War.
He went on to serve as interim Mayor of Des Moines in the 1990s and as President of his alma mater Drake University the only alumnus of that school to go on to lead it.
He and his wife Billie also lent their names to the Ray Center at Drake which promotes good character in Iowa kids.
