The Mary J. Treglia Community House held an event called "Loving our Immigrant Neighbor," where two Afghan refugees were able to speak to the public in an effort to help people understand what Afghan refugees have experienced.

They also provided ways those in Siouxland can get involved and help these refugees to get better acclimated to the area and life in the United States.

"There are a lot of Afghan people who came to the US when the Taliban took over the country," said refugee Halima Shokuri. "We want [the people here] to hear our story, understand our situation and think about ways that they can help us and help our families."

"When you have a person that comes and shares their story, they make it real and you can just see the complexity of the issue and I think it helps people put a face to it," said Northwestern professor Dr. Jason Lief. "I think they're more inclined to get involved."
