Cherokee, Iowa Shopko closing
The Northwest Iowa community of Cherokee is losing another national retailer, just months after K-Mart announced plans to close its store in that city.
First it was K-Mart, now it's Shopko.
This morning, the Wisconsin-based company announced it's closing 39 stores across the country including this one in Cherokee, and it has some customers unhappy.
"Very upset," said Mary Dolph, a regular customer.
"It's going to hurt the community, I think, a little bit," Zach Bedsaul of Sutherland.
The Cherokee store is the only one in Siouxland closing, though ten Shopkos are closing throughout Iowa, Nebraska and South Dakota.
"It was fantastic having it here, it was brand new," said Lynn Winterhof, a customer.
""They built a brand new building in the community and thought it was going to be something pretty special," said Bedsaul.
Shopko constructed the $3 million building that opened in the fall of 2015.
"And I come here once a week, if not more, so it will be missed," said Winterhof.
While Shopko released a statement saying, "they will assist those who are interested in transferring to open positions at other locations, or will provide severance benefits according to our guidelines" ...customers say they're concerned about the future of businesses in Cherokee.
"I mean I was really looking forward to this store coming here. Now K-Mart closing and this closing. I don't know what Cherokee's going to do," said Dolph.
Shopko has announced plans to close 39 stores across the country and the Cherokee location is on the list.
The Hometown Shopko store opened in Cherokee in 2015.
A spokesperson for Shopko says, " Shopko deeply values its employees and the communities it serves. It is never an easy decision to close a location and Shopko thanks its Cherokee employees for all their support and hard work as well as its customers. Despite all of the stores’ efforts, as we reviewed the long-term outlook on profitability, sales trends, and potential growth we came to the difficult decision that it was necessary to close the store. Shopko will assist those who are interested in transferring to open positions at other locations, or will provide severance benefits according to our guidelines."
The Cherokee store will begin liquidation on December 7th and close the end of February.
The Shopko in Sioux City will remain open.
Shopko operates 363 stores in 24 states.
