City Council in discussion to bring a cannabis oil dispensary to Sioux City
Sioux City is looking to become one of just five licensed dispensaries for medical cannabis oil in the state of Iowa.
The City Council is expected to discuss on Monday endorsing an effort by the dispensary company "MedPharm" to open a location here.
Council Member Rhonda Capron was called by an affiliate from MedPharm Iowa, a cannabis pharmaceutical company of out Des Moines.
MedPharm called Capron to see if the council would be interested in bringing a medical cannabis oil dispensary to the city.
Sioux City is one of the largest cities in Iowa and MedPharm has permission to put dispensaries in up to five cities.
With Sioux City's position as one of the western- most cities in Iowa, it makes sense as a primary location.
"I just want everyone out there to know that we are being proactive and we want to do the right thing. Times are changing and I think if we can get people relief with medical cannabis and maybe get away from some of the heavier drugs that they have to do, I think this might be a good answer for them," said Capron.
This is still the very early stages of the process, Capron said she just wants to gauge the council members interest on the topic.
She also stressed several times that this isn't a dispensary for recreational marijuana, but medical cannabis oil that would have to be prescribed by a doctor.
