Gunshot wound victim dies; shooting investigation now underway in Sioux City

PM UPDATE: A Sioux City man is behind bars after a Wednesday night shooting at a home on the near- Northside left another man dead.

Police say their investigation began at Mercy Medical Center around 6:00 PM last night.

60-year-old Liborio Martinez- Rubio was arrested after police searched his home in the 1600 block of Jones Street where the shooting is believed to have taken place.

Court documents say when police executed a warrant to search that house, they found several handguns, some of them stolen.

Rubio reportedly admitted some of those guns belonged to him and had been recently fired, despite him not being allowed to own guns as a convicted felon.

"After further investigation, a search warrant was executed at 1609 Jones Street. Illegal drugs were located, firearms were located, and several items of interest during that search," said Sioux City Police Chief Rex Mueller.

Court documents also say police found nearly 200 grams of methamphetamine, 42 grams of marijuana, and approximately $100,000 dollars inside Rubio's home.

"Right now the outset, we don't know exactly what the motive is. We can speculate that the crimes are drug related but that's all we'll be saying at this point," said Sioux City Police Sergeant Ryan Bertrand.

The victim, Javier Cheron, died of his injuries at Mercy last night.

Despite that, Rubio is not charged with murder at this time.

He's currently being held on charges of Possession of Meth with Intent to Deliver and Being a Felon in Possession of a Firearm.

He remains in the Woodbury County Jail tonight on $500,000 dollars bond.

Police say more charges are pending.
