Local schools organize walkouts in remembrance of Parkland shooting victims
Students across the nation will be walking out tomorrow in remembrance for those who died in the Parkland, Florida shooting.
Students will lead protests all around Siouxland for 17 minutes, one minute for each person who died that day.
With that, the Sioux City school district discussed what they may expect from the potential walkouts and how it will be handled.
“I welcome it, as long as it's done in a peaceful and positive manner. We're not prohibiting anybody from doing this walkout tomorrow. Any students doing this walkout, once it's over we expect them to come back to school and continue with their instruction,” said Jen Gomez, Director of Student Services with Sioux City Schools.
Parents are urged to discuss topics with their son or daughter before the protest, and Gomez offered some advice on how to take those first steps.
"Like ‘Oh I saw this today on Facebook’ or ‘I saw this on Twitter’ and just ask them the question, you know what do you think about this? How are you feeling about this? What are you hearing at school? Think, just having those starter questions is definitely a good way to get going."
Protests throughout Siouxland schools will be taking place starting at 10:00 AM tomorrow.
