Morningside College adds men's and women's lacrosse to athletics offerings
Morningside announced they will be adding a men and women's lacrosse team to their intercollegiate varsity sports and will begin competing in 2020.
Athletic Director Tim Jager says they've been talking about adding a lacrosse team for years but space was the major issue.
Players plan to play on a brand new turf field that'll be built just west of the football stadium.
"It's exciting. I think it'll be great excitement on campus and we'll bring a new market to campus and I also think it may help with retention for some of our other sports. I think it'll be a fun option for some athletes to join the lacrosse team," said Jager.
This summer Morningside will apply to be an affiliate member of the KCAC, the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference.
They also plan to hire a full time coach this summer who will recruit athletes during the 2018-2019 academic year.
"We think this is another market and another way for us to boost enrollment and to boost excitement here on campus to add lacrosse teams," Jager said.
By 2020, they anticipate 9 to 10 teams will be in the KCAC conference.
With the addition of the lacrosse team, this will increase the total number of varsity sports offered at Morningside to 28.
