Riverside Pool's lifeguards were put to the test today on their lifesaving abilities
The guards performed a lifeguard alertness test where they had to save a drowning swimmer.
Staff and guards had to call 911 and work alongside Sioux City Fire and EMS until the issue was resolved.
Shortly after the whistle was blown the guards were informed it was only a drill.
A first year lifeguard made the save and says he was prepared.
"I didn't really panic. I just made sure I slid in and did everything correctly. I felt really prepared. We had it done in a matter of seconds and everything just came together and it happened so fast."
The lifeguard alertness drills were also performed at the other two pools in Sioux City.
Parks and recreation want Siouxlanders to know that the lifeguards are prepared for any situation to come.
"It's more then just a summer job it's a very important job they do and very important function they serve and that's why we reiterate these kind of drills," said Recreations Coordinator John Byrnes
He says they perform other in-service drills with guards at the pools each week.
