SIOUX CITY, Iowa — A Sioux City man is in jail after leading police on a pursuit and assaulting an officer.
Just after midnight on January 8th, Police initiated a traffic stop for a strobing license plate at 16th and Douglas, when the driver took off.
According to court documents, the pursuit went through several streets in Sioux City.
At one point, the suspect and his car was hit broadside by an innocent passing motorist and that is when the suspect left the vehicle and fled the scene.
A police officer pursued the suspect on foot.
Documents also say that the suspect was taken to the ground multiple times but was able to get back up and continued fighting with the officer.
Once the officer was able to pin the suspect to the ground he was given commands to place his hands behind his back, but continued to struggle with the officer.
During the struggle both the officer and the suspect suffered injuries. Other officers arrived on scene and the suspect was taken into custody.
Jorge Martin Leon, 28, of Sioux City is charged with eluding, assault on police, interfere with official acts, leaving the scene of police, driver license suspended, no insurance and parole violation.
Martin is currently in the Woodbury County Jail on a bond of $35,000.
His next court date is scheduled for January 18th.
