Sioux City Police investigating Credit Card fraud at K-Mart and Sonic
Sioux City Police are investigating a massive credit card fraud case involving nearly 2 dozen local residents and at least two local businesses.
Police tell us that investigation began last week when they took reports from about 20 Sioux Citians of unauthorized credit card transactions.
So far, police have determined those credit card numbers were stolen from K-Mart in a data breach sometime between September of 2016 and April and from Sonic sometime between April and October of this year.
Officers say this activity is part of a new cloning scheme, where scammers make a small transaction to verify the card is active, cancel it and purchase a pre-paid card, something that rarely shows up on fraud alert systems.
Police advise people to check their accounts daily for possible fraud and immediately contact police and their bank if they see something suspicious.
