Siouxland student wins essay competition

A sixth grader at Sacred Heart School in Sioux City has won a state-wide essay competition.

Scarlett Walsh won the competition after writing her essay on the topic "What the American Flag Means to Me".

Students across the state of Iowa were asked to write an essay on this topic and then they were judged on three levels including city, district and state. If you passed one level, you were able to move on to the next.

Scarlett says, ""It makes me really happy. I'm glad I could represent my school. I really love American and I'm glad I could express it."

Scarlett says the essay took her about a week to write and she really enjoys english and writing.

Scarlett will now travel to Des Moines to present her essay at the state wide Elks Club conference on April 28, 2018.

She says she is both excited and nervous.
