SIOUX CITY, Iowa — One thing the late, great Betty White loved more than just about anything in this world was animals.
Throughout her life, she adopted 26 dogs and in 2017 she received the James Smithson Bicentennial Medal for her commitment to wildlife and efforts to create a sustainable planet.
After White's passing, fans took to Twitter to start a movement encouraging everyone to donate $5 to an animal welfare charity on January 17th, which would have been her 100th birthday.
Local animal shelters are going to benefit from funds being raised in all entities.
"If somebody wants to make a difference or paw it forward, what a great way to do so," said Kelly Erie with the Siouxland Humane Society. "That goes towards helping the animals that come in and helping animals who may need special foods or special medications. The animals love her, we love her for everything she did for the animals out there."
To donate you can visit the website of any humane society of your choice, like the Siouxland Humane Society, the Sioux City Animal Adoption and Rescue Center or Noah's Hope Animal Rescue, or you could sponsor the adoption of older animals still looking for a home.
