South Sioux City Middle School teacher wins $25k Milken Educator Award
A teacher at South Sioux City Middle School received a surprise this morning.
John Pickinpaugh received a 2017-18 "Milken Educator Award" referred to as the "Oscars of Teaching."
Pickinpaugh teaches 8th grade science at South Sioux and says he never expected to be recognized like this.
"It was a huge surprise. I thought we were coming in here to talk about the students maths scores, which have been increasing over the last 8 years I've been here. It's a great honor, it just makes me want to keep pushing forward, keep making my students better and also keep the world of education going and making that a better place as well," said Pickinpaugh.
The award comes with a $25,000 dollar prize, which the master's candidate at Wayne State says will come in handy.
He also plans to donate some of the money back to the school
