SOUTH SIOUX CITY, Neb. — School is back in session and local schools are providing students with an unlimited supply of healthy foods.
South Sioux City Community Schools are working with their new lunch provider Lunchtime Solutions to promote health and wellness by serving K-12 students an unlimited supply of fruits and vegetables from their new salad bars that are produced by local farmers.
Food Services Director, Mike Penne said, "We use freshly grown vegetables through our farmers market program we bring stuff in from local farms. The healthy option is the main thing we want to propose to our kids here in South Sioux City.”
Penne says the fruit and vegetables are changed seasonally for students to get a variety of healthy options to choose from.
SSC Community Schools Superintendent, Todd Storm said, "We know that some of our students may or may not get that type of a meal or nutrition at home so it's up to us to make sure that they have some healthy choices to eat and that those choices are nutritious.”
The healthy snack bars are in all six elementary schools and South Sioux Middle and High School.
