Sunnyside Elementary students hold Winter Olympics competition
The Winter Olympics are kicking off tonight in South Korea... but students here at a local elementary school got to experience them in person today.
The students at Sunnyside Elementary held an opening ceremony for their school's Winter Olympics this morning.
Students in groups representing various countries will be able to earn up to 15 medals in various activities across five subjects.
"I didn't know what to expect. This is the first time we've ever done anything like this before. To hear them chanting their country's name, it was just something special and something I will remember. Just that first image when I walked into the gym and I saw all the kids going crazy, waving their flags, it's a memory that I will keep forever," said Principal Blair Taylor.
The Sunnyside Olympics will run 2 and a half weeks and the class at the top of the "medal board" at the end will receive a reward.
