Teenage driver dies after rollover accident southeast of Le Mars

A 16-year-old is dead after an accident southeast of Le Mars yesterday afternoon.

On July 19th at 1:17 PM, the Plymouth Co. Sheriff's Office got several 911 calls about a two-vehicle accident, with injuries, at the intersection C38 and Otter Ave., southeast of Le Mars.

Police say a 2006 Chevy Malibu was going north on Otter Ave., approaching the intersection of C38.

Daisy Pippett, 16, was driving.

A 5-year-old girl and a 3-year-old boy, both family-members of Pippett, were passengers in the vehicle.

A 1998 International straight truck owned and operated by Scott Rohmiller, 59, of Le Mars, was going east on C38, getting close to the intersection of Otter Ave.

Nicholas Anthony of Le Mars was a passenger in that vehicle.

Investigators said for reasons still unknown, Pippett failed to yield from the stop sign and pulled onto C38.

Rohmiller tried, but was ultimately unable to avoid a crash.

The straight truck hit Pippett's car, which rolled on its top on the north shoulder of C38.

At least one of the small children was thrown out of the vehicle.

Four of the people involved in the accident went to the Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars, with injuries ranging from minor to life-threatening.

One person was immediately taken by Mercy Air Care to a hospital in Sioux Falls.

Daisy Pippett did not survive her injuries and has died.

The 3-year-old and the 5-year-old are still in the hospital in Sioux Falls.

Rohmiller and Anthony were treated and released from the Floyd Valley Hospital with minor injuries.

The Plymouth County Sheriff's Office was helped on site by the Iowa State Patrol, Iowa Department of Transportation Enforcement, Le Mars Police, the Sioux County Sheriff's Office, Le Mars Fire and EMS, Oyens Fire and EMS and Remsen Fire and EMS, as well as the Plymouth County Secondary Roads department.

The accident is still under investigation and no further information is available at this time.
