Featured MVP: Paola Ochoa
Sioux City East Senior Paola Ochoa is a contrast of styles. On the Soccer field, she's is flashy and aggressive. "I like doing a lot of tricks in the game", says Ochoa. If I can, I like scoring too."
East coach Tyler Mogensen adds, "On the field she's very enthusiastic. Her personality kind of comes out in how she plays."
Off the field she is the soft-spoken leader of the 12th ranked Black Raiders.
"She's very soft spoken off the field", says Mogensen. "But when she gets on the field she kind of turns into a different person."
Paola has been a starter on the Black Raider soccer team since she was a freshman. In her career to date she has scored 51 goals. She credits her family for her success.
"My Family- they always go and support me. And my sisters are always telling me to do good... if people see that I can get good scholarships and stuff."
As one of only three seniors on the team, Paola has been counted on to be an example to her younger teammates.
Mogensen says, "We're very young. Just a couple seniors, a couple juniors. So she has kind of taken a nurturing role to the younger girls, and they really look up to her. There's no one better to emulate than her; the way she goes to training, every time we condition she's at the front. She's a really good role model for the rest of the girls and kind of the cornerstone of our team this year, and we rely on her quite a bit."
Paola is going to continue her soccer career after graduation. She will be playing soccer for Iowa Western Community College in Council Bluffs in the fall.
